Just before Lent is Shrove Tuesday, synonymous with pancakes in the UK. The origins of the day are much more poignant. It is a day to make confession of our weaknesses in life; those weaknesses meant to be dealt with in absolution through the sacrificial period of Lent.
When we store things up that we might suspect are wrong, we also store stress. Someone once said ‘secrets make you sick’, referring to the impact of that stress on the body. Confession releases that stress and then Lent changes your habit to a more positive, God focused future.
The advice we have in James 4:8 is ‘Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.’ (NIV) When we admit there is a problem, the solution is easier to embrace. Use your faith to believe in your future!
